Hearing impairment can create a big impact on a person's life, physically and emotionally. Hearing loss has been linked to stress, depression, loneliness, reduced job performance and reduced physical or mental health in adults. Hearing loss in adults often happens gradually and hence goes unnoticed. Due to this many people live in denial. And as a result, they stop communicating or withdraw from social situations because they are unable to understand what is being said.
The earlier hearing loss in a child can cause more serious effects on the child's overall development. It causes delay in development of receptive and expressive communication skills.
A moderate degree of hearing loss if left untreated can affect a person's daily life in a significant way. Someone with a moderate hearing impairment cannot hear sounds softer than 40 - 70 dB. This means they may be unable to hear sounds like normal conversation or the ringing of a telephone.
For some people, hearing impairment may cause psychological disorders. Loss of hearing lowers the quality of life, which results in physical and social consequences.
